Vintage Movie Poster/Review – Les Diaboliques

A film review of Les Diaboliques (1955) with the rare vintage movie poster.

Starring Simone Signoret, Vera Clouzot, Paul Meurisse, Charles Vanel and Jean Brochard. Directed by Henri-Georges Clouzot.

The story is a mix of psychological horror and thriller, with the plot focusing on a woman’s husband and his mistress conspiring to kill the man. After he is killed his body disappears and strange things start to happen in the boarding school where the film is situated.

Some of the scenes are truly remarkable and you can see why the film caused so much sensation back in 1955, one particular scene where Michael emerges from the bathtub is incredible.

It’s release in France caused a huge sensation, with crowds flocking to see the movie. Many critics have likened the movie to those of Alfred Hitchcock’s and whilst this is true in some ways it really does stand out on its own.

You can see why Alfred Hitchcock so wanted the rights to this movie, no doubt he would have done a fine job but I think even Hitch would have struggled to surpass Clouzot’s direction in this movie. Clouzot filmed this straight after Wages of Fear, another wonderful movie and he was certainly on a roll during this period.

It is now ranked as one of the greatest horror movies of all-time, it deserves that praise and more, a wonderful 107 minutes ride full of suspense.

The Vintage Movie Poster –

les diaboliques vintage film poster

It is quite common for films to be re-titled when released in another country, les diaboliques was subsequently changed to The Fiends in the UK. Apart from the recently released BFI posters for this film this is the only known vintage movie poster from the UK release of 1955.

What a poster it is! The colours, the eerie hand rising up, make this a cleverly designed poster which would have easily enticed paying customers through the cinema doors. The poster also mentions ‘Wages of Fear’ which again convinces the public even more that they have to see the next movie directed by Henri-Georges Clouzot.

Measuring 30″ x 40″ and in fine condition with just the very minor defects, it displays wonderfully well. If you are a fan of the film or collect rare movie posters, this one has to be in it. A truly scarce vintage movie poster.
